IN THE EARLY 1870's, Heinrich Schliemann was on a quest to discover the mythical city of Troy. His amateur excavations at Hissarlik, in modern-day Turkey, revealed nine layers of a mysterious city, exposing traces of destruction by fire, earthquake and warfare. Troy VII has four subdivisions, and these strata are most associated with Homeric Troy.
