BROOKHOUSE ESTATE in Salford was conceived and designed as a progressive 'garden suburb'.

"In the early 1960s it was possible to traverse all the estate by walking and jumping the low red brick walls. It was the first thing I noticed on returning that for a child who lives there now this wasn’t possible. Our conversations moved from picturing children to looking at some of the possible constraints on play. The low red brick wall became our motif and it led us to many discussions about play, property, boundaries, gardening, and it is the low red brick wall which we decided to photograph".
